H. Pylori is one of the most common root causes of digestive issues.
This bacterial infection is the most common in the world with more than half of the population (likely more) estimated to have it.
This stomach infection is often overlooked, because testing for it is poor.
It can lead to digestive issues like SIBO, candida and parasites because it lowers stomach acid which is a primary defense against pathogens.
With low stomach acid, food is not digested properly and feeds bacterial or fungal overgrowth.
H. pylori causes a wide variety of symptoms such as anxiety, depression, reflux/GERD, bloating, fatigue, rosacea, constipation or diarrhea, food intolerances, burping, flatulence, pain or burning on empty stomach, and undigested food in the stool. It can also trigger an autoimmune attack of the thyroid.
I’ve written a book about h.pylori on how to best address it naturally.
But sometimes even the best protocols, done consistently won’t work. And antibiotics can make things worse. Why?
It’s not h. pylori that’s the problem
If half the world have h. pylori, why do some people have zero symptoms from it?
People who are symptoms free have an immune system that can keep the bacteria under control. Some people theorize that a little bit of h. pylori may even help with environmental allergies, training the immune system to be stronger.
So why’s is h.pylori debilitating for some people?
The issue lays with the immune system, the nervous system and the adrenals. The thing that effects all three is stress.
Chronic or intense emotional stress, life style stress (diet, sleep, overexercising, overworking, overcommitting, people pleasing, etc.) burns out the adrenals, disrupts the nervous system and suppresses the immune system.
With h. Pylori, it’s not the severity of infection that can make it hard to get rid of but the weakness of the body’s defenses (immune, nervous system, adrenals).
Instead of hitting h. Pylori harder with more killing agents, supporting your defenses can make any protocol more effective. It can make all the difference.
Most important steps to take
If you have many of the symptoms above, take the GI Map test, which will spot the infections that other tests miss. False negatives can throw people off for years.
If you have h. Pylori you can use the natural protocol in my book or antibiotics. Antibiotics run the risk of lowering beneficial bacteria and causing more biome imbalance and inflammation. It is should be the last choice in my opinion. You can likely do it without them if you get your body ready for healing.
My natural mastic gum protocol is designed to break through biofilm and help support the immune system. And it doesn’t harm beneficial bacteria.
When natural protocols don’t work it is because the body doesn’t have the energy to heal. But this can be fixed.
How to use Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis
To help clients recover their adrenals and improve their metabolism (mitochondrial health) I run a hair tissue mineral analysis test (HTMA) to assess the state of the adrenals, thyroid, nervous system, immune system, blood sugar and hormonal balance. This gives us an overall view of what’s going on with the body.
The test also shows how stressed the body is and if it is depleted, inflamed or both.
With burned out adrenals you’ll be more sensitive to stressed and easily overwhelmed. Replacing minerals and working with diet and lifestyle helps get people out of the stress cycle that keeps them stuck.
My mind and body program includes the GI Map and the HTMA test to identify what overgrowths are present and WHY the body is allowing them to be there.
If you’ve been struggling with h. Pylori or SIBO without success it’s time to understand why they are there in the first place.
Building your body’s natural defenses will not just make you feel better but also help the herbs or antibiotics do their job.
How to address the real root cause
In my practice, I find h. Pylori and SIBO to be the biggest root drivers of digestive symptoms. Both rely on healthy adrenals, nervous system and immune system for successful eradication.
Most people with h. Pylori and SIBO are so anxious, defeated and frazzled that they just want to kill the overgrowth that is highjacking their life. But you have to work on the foundation first or the herbs won’t work. They may deplete your body more.
Mineral balancing will help boost energy and lessen anxiety, which creates a better mental environment for healing.
The HTMA results allows me to go deeper into the root cause of stressors, because this test actually measure the effect of stress on the body. No one can deny the affects of stress when they see the effect on mineral levels.
If you want to understand your body as a whole system, and are willing to change some habits, the mind and body program will work well for you.
This work is not about just replacing minerals (though it helps), it’s about understanding the root cause stressors of a system that lose resilience, and how to build it back up.
This is about being more yourself and feeling more comfortable in your life ultimately. And it may require a few changes to get there.
When you understand why you have an infection or overgrowth it is much easier to address it.
This is a gift you can give yourself for a lifetime, not a protocol that needs to be repeated periodically.
I hope this blog post has helped you think about your digestive health in a different way or understand why protocol after protocol has failed.
