The key to healing IBS

The biggest complaint I hear from people who are stuck in healing IBS is that no matter what they do or what they eat, nothing seems to help.

While it sometimes feels good to let off frustration, this isn’t true.

What you eat, think and do definitely does matter. And though it can be confusing and emotional to figure out what is and isn’t working on your own, it doesn’t mean it’s hopeless.

Hope, in fact, is the most important component in overcoming any health challenge.

When doctors tell IBS patients that it’s all in their head, they are right on a certain level.

Not that you’re making it all up. But that everything in life IS in your head. Your head is where you create possibilities, predict outcomes, prioritize action. Your head shapes your whole reality.

How we approach healing starts in our head. And in our heart. And it can be THE difference between making progress and staying stuck.

Here is the big question…

Do you believe you can heal?

If you do. You’re right.

If you don’t, you’re also right.

Whatever you believe will be reinforced to you over and over again.

Our body aligns itself with our belief system and acts in accordance. This is how opinion shapes physical outcome.

Take my example. The best thing I had going for me when I was struggling with IBS was a refusal to stay sick. Otherwise I was pretty lost, confused and overwhelmed most of the time. But I hoped, I prayed and refused to take no for an answer.

My trail and error approach to healing was a stab in the dark. But a hopeful stab. Trying different things and staying in action, kept me going, despite failure. Until one day, I succeeded and won the health jackpot!

So how do you begin to believe?

Even if you’re full of doubts (I was too) there’s something inside you that hopes and strives for health. Otherwise you wouldn’t bother reading this. You’d just give up.

And there is something to do when you start to lose hope.

You simply find some support!

Support comes in many forms. Doing something that makes you happy and relaxed. Reading a healing success story. Talking to someone who gets it. Working with someone who’s been there and succeeded, or who simply believes in the possibility of your full recovery.

Resting in that supportive energy recharges hope and energizes the body. The more support you have, the easier it is to keep going.

My support came from deep inside me. A voice that refused to believe there was no solution and would not give up in the face of exhaustion, anger, discouragement and fear. The discomfort of trying was so much better than the discomfort of suffering.

I believe in your possibility of healing

I believe your body is amazing and knows what to do. I believe every cell inside you conspires in your favor.

Often there’s something we need to learn before healing can happen. The lesson is different for everyone. But there is a message in the healing process. Your body wants to tell you something very important. Something that will make you much happier and healthier when you learn it.

What is your IBS trying to tell you?

IBS told me.:”Your health comes first”, “Eat to bring your body back into balance“,  “Learn how to rest.” “Listen to your body”.

IBS also gave me many gifts. It prompted me move to San Francisco, where I met my husband, discovered Chi Gong and started Do It Yourself Health. My path seems clear to me in hindsight. To suffer, to learn, to heal and to help.

What is your IBS telling you?

Here are some typical messages: Not to eat certain foods. To stop beating yourself up. To lower your expectations of yourself.  To believe you are enough. To stop repressing your emotions. To let go of your fear. To see the support around you.

When your body is in pain, it’s asking for your undivided attention. It needs your hope and help. It needs you to believe in how powerful you are.

You have everything you need to heal inside you

In Chinese medicine, digestive issues are associated with feeling a lack of support in life. This is just a feeling. You are supported. You are.

What I craved most when I was sick, was some company. A community of people there to support me when I was low.

That is why I’m creating this for you. An army of support. A cheering section of love and compassion. Access to a community of superhealers. So you don’t feel so alone in your journey.

The Superhealer circle

I believe there’s power in numbers. I believe that sharing experiences trumps reading books and blogs.  I believe that heartfelt conversations inspire people. I believe that helping feels as good as getting help.

This is my dream and my vision. To coach you as a group. So you can have my support when you need it, not just one hour every other week.

This is a better way to learn, stay motivate and accomplish tough goals.

There will be a grain-free program to follow (with recipes). A Facebook group to interact. A monthly group call. And daily reminders to calm your nervous system. There will be trouble shooting tips, friendships formed and lots of attention. It may even make healing fun.

If you need accountability, we’ll keep you accountable. If you need time off no one will bother you. If you need some private time with me, that can be arranged.  And I will work hard to make sure you have what you need to be succeed.

  3. nice blog site, I too am just recovering from IBS-d, I have used many of the supplements but my biggest discovery was that much of my nausea and pain came from excess histamine, I found a study that used Ketotifem fumarate,in a study and wonder of wonders my nausea disappeared. It is much easier to heal if not nauseous all the time. I use a probiotic every day, Vit D drops, Vit B/C complex and now just have to get off codeine that was used for pain. The naturopath found my histamine went down %50 and it is still falling. Thank you for sharing your story with the SCD guys, their food tips helped me a lot when I was losing weight and could not eat anything. Those broths and smoothies saved me. I am still finding out what foods are irritating but wheat is definitely one of them. Thanks

  4. Just to add to post below, I am in Canada and the Ketotifin was available for me to try, my doctor prescribed it but I can only used a lower dosage 4 mg twice a day and it works well. The study is in GUT magazine, 2010, Klooker is the author

  5. I feel a little teary reading this. I really need some help but am feeling like I’ve exhausted so many options. My family is very supportive. I refuse to give up.
